Pompey Sports & Education Foundation have joined forces with City Wide Taxis in Portsmouth to help taxi drivers lead a healthier lifestyle.
Taxi driving is a sedentary occupation with irregular and long hours, and it can be highly stressful. As such it is associated with high levels of smoking, a poor diet, inactivity and exposure to vehicle exhaust fumes.
Drivers were given individual health packs with information about portion size, healthy eating and lifestyle questionnaires.
City Wide Taxis' Tony Jefferson said: "In view of their perceived lifestyle taxi drivers are an excellent vehicle to promote a healthier lifestyle to the community as a whole.
"On the whole most drivers do lead a fairly healthy lifestyle but this initiative will help them to improve on this as well as promoting it within the general public."
Paul Allen, PSEF health trainer, said: “Tony and the team at City Wide have embraced this initiative.
"We have delivered over 90 health packs to drivers. This is a first for a taxi firm in the city and shows that City Wide are as committed to their staff as they are to the general public.”
