It’s men’s health week and the Pompey Sports & Education Foundation’s male health scheme is promoting the event.
With men less likely than women to visit the doctor, the objectives of the week are:
- To get men online if they are not using the internet
- To encourage those men who are using the internet to use it to look for health information
- To empower those men already using the internet for health reasons to use it more effectively and safely
According to national statistics, the UK has 40 million adult internet users with 30 million people using the web every day.
But there are nine million adults in the UK who have never used the internet and four million of those are among the disadvantaged.
70 per cent of respondents to a malehealth.co.uk survey in 2009 said the internet was their first stop for health information, mainly because it was quick, private and free.
And according to national statistic, 37 per cent of men used the internet for health information in 2009, up from 31 per cent in 2008.
