Pompey Ladies started their Premier League Cup campaign in fine style with a 7-0 demolition of Plymouth.
The first flurry of action came as the game was in its infancy, with Sadie Blakely making a fine catch from an early Plymouth attack.
The keeper’s punt upfield soared over the half-way line and into the path of Charley WILSON (pictured above, left), who out-paced the Argyle backline to open the scoring after just three minutes.
Shelly COX doubled the Blues’ lead soon after, when she banged in a cross from Jemma Tewkesbury.
TEWKESBURY then scored one of her own, firing home from the edge of the box when the Blues were awarded a free-kick after their visitors’ keeper handled outside of her area.
Leeta RUTHERFORD added a fourth shortly after the half-hour mark when she converted a penalty, awarded for a foul on Gemma Hillier.
Pompey increased their lead further early in second half with WILSON rising to meet Cox’s inswinging corner and heading home.
And WILSON then completed her hat-trick from the spot after being brought down in the area.
The Blues completed their rout 82 minutes when Kirsty McGee put a good cross in for substitute Lucy QUINN to convert.
Pompey boss Vanessa Raynbird said: “It was a really good win and I thought we played some very good football.
“We found gaps, we moved the ball quickly and worked hard – they did exactly what we asked them to do.
“It was a good, all-round performance, which was very pleasing. Hopefully we can continue this run and take our performances into future matches.”
The win catapults the Blues to the top of the Group 3 table, ahead of Reading, Keynsham and Plymouth.
Pompey’s next Premier League Cup game, at Reading, will be played on Sunday, February 12. This weekend, they host Sheffield FC in the third round of the FA Women’s Cup
