Pompey are backing this year's Blue Day spectacular.

Blue Day will take place on Friday, April 20 – the day before Pompey’s last home game of the season against Derby County.

The annual event is organised by The News and the Tom Prince Cancer Trust – a local charity run by the family of Tom, who was 15 when he died of osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer.

First held on the eve of the FA Cup semi-final against West Brom in 2008, this is the sixth Blue Day. Previous events have raised almost £200,000 for the charity.

Blues manager Michael Appleton said the club was delighted to support the 2012 fundraiser in which Pompey fans young and old will be urged to wear the club's famous blue colours for the day and pay for the privilege of doing so, or hold sponsored events at schools and workplaces.

"We are very happy to be associated with Blue Day," said Appleton. "The club plays a big role in the community and helps as many good causes as possible.

"But the Tom Prince Cancer Trust is obviously a cause which is close to the club’s heart.

"I didn’t know Tom personally, but I’ve heard a lot about how much he was loved and what a brave lad he was.

"So we want everyone to get behind Blue Day and raise as much money as possible for a great cause."

The club have vowed to support the event by advertising Blue Day on the big screen and taking part in other events on the day of the Derby game, when the second fans’ day is set to take place.

Tom’s dad, Clinton Prince, said: "At the end of the day I know people are struggling but if everybody in Portsmouth put 50p in that would be fantastic. You really wouldn’t miss that.

"It’s about getting the message out there. Whatever money you raise will be a fantastic bonus. Our aim is to get the £1m for the research."

Mark Acheson, deputy editor of The News, said: "We are hugely grateful to Pompey for all the support they are giving us.

"Blue Day is a fantastic way to celebrate the passion we all have for Pompey and to raise money at the same time for such a great cause."
