Andy Awford has been appointed Pompey’s new Academy Manager.
The former Blues defender made 341 appearances for the club after joining as a 15-year-old.
Awford said: “I’m really excited to be coming back to Pompey. It’s a big job but I know this club well and can’t wait to get started.”
Chief executive David Lampitt added: “We’re delighted that Andy has agreed to run our youth set-up. He has a great affinity for this club and has a fantastic football pedigree. We’re pleased to welcome him back to Pompey.”
An England schoolboy, youth and under-21 international, Awford forged an outstanding central defensive partnership with Kit Symons that took the Blues to within three minutes of the FA Cup final in 1992 and within two goals of the Premier League the following season.
A one-club man, he was forced to retire aged 28 after a series of injuries, including a broken leg, hampered his career.
He worked for Pompey as chief scout and reserve team manager and has spent the last few years co-commentating on Blues matches for BBC Radio Solent.
In March 2010 Awford – who was born in Worcester – was inducted into the Pompey Hall of Fame.
