Pompey’s Sam Magri suffered heartbreak despite his second successive goal from the spot as Germany knocked England out of the under-17 World Cup.
The Three Lions lost 3-2 to miss out on a semi-final berth at the tournament in Mexico.
Ironically, the match was played on the 21st anniversary of West Germany’s penalty shoot-out victory against England in the 1990 World Cup semi-finals.
The Germans marched into a convincing lead in the opening 24 minutes with goals from Samed Yesil and Kaan Ayhan.
When Yesil added a third in the 54th minute England found themselves with a mountain to climb.
But Magri, who netted in England’s penalty shoot-out win over Argentina in the previous round, pulled one back on 67 minutes when he calmly stroked home from the penalty spot after Nicholas Powell had been brought down.
It was a goal that sparked some much needed life into England with Hallam Hope pulling another goal back six minutes from time.
But the Germans remained resolute to book a place in the last four.
