Pompey’s Sam Magri scored in a penalty shoot-out to put England through to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
It means Magri and his England team-mates will now face Germany in the quarter-finals on Monday.
Argentina took the lead in normal time in rain-soaked conditions in Mexico before Raheem Sterling equalised on 40 minutes.
John Peacock’s side dominated, but as the conditions worsened both teams began to find it hard to break through, and, as the match neared full-time, Argentina were reduced to 10 men when Marcos Pinto was sent-off for a second bookable offence.
England still had a chance to win the match in normal time, but Max Clayton was unable to force the ball into Argentina’s goal, leaving the game to go to penalties.
Magri was the first to take a spot-kick, which he duly dispatched to put England ahead.
Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford saved twice as England won 4-2 on penalties to set up their last-eight showdown with Germany.
Pompey’s academy manager Andy Awford said: “I’m really pleased for Sam – I felt nervous for him when he stepped up to take the penalty but he knocked it in with confidence.
“I’m delighted to see him go through with England.
“It helps to further his education and experience as he has been playing South American sides, and now he’ll face top European competition which can only help his development.
“And I now know who my penalty taker will be next season!”
