Pompey Academy began the season with a 2-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at the Wellington Sports Ground.
Nathan Modest and Jack Poulton were on target for the visitors.
Director of youth operations Paul Smalley said: “We played against an older and more physical side who relied on power.
“We created some good chances with some excellent build-up play.
“There were some good individual performances all over the pitch with Lewis Tallack and Alex Grant firm in defence, while Lewis Stockford and Carl Walshe (pictured) were creative going forward.
“The result was disappointing after such a good pre-season but all the players looked fit and ready for the challenge of the season."
Pompey: Fry; Tallack, Bennett, Grant, Butler (Fitzharris); Harris (Colson), Tsovolos, Stockford, Seeley; Jennings, Walshe
There was better news for the under-16 side who romped to a 5-1 victory against the same opposition.
The Blues scored all of their goals in the first 30 minutes of the game with Jack Maloney grabbing a hat-trick and Sam Wilson adding two more.
