Pompey Academy 2 Charlton Academy 1
Pompey came from behind to beat Charlton and record a second successive Premier Academy League victory.
The Blues got off to a terrible start as Callum Harriott’s goal put the visitors ahead after just two minutes.
But Carl Walshe (pictured) levelled with his seventh goal of the season, before Billy Tsovolos grabbed the winner midway through the first half.
Academy manager Andy Awford said: “We got an early shock when we conceded after just a couple of minutes. It was a good finish from 25 yards by their player but maybe we could have done a bit more to close him down quicker.
“It would have been easy for the lads to fold but instead they showed tremendous spirit and character, stuck to the game plan and managed to get back into the match.
“Walshe completed a good team move to equalise and he deserved that goal for all the work he’s put in over the last few weeks playing up front by himself.
“And then we won a free-kick out wide. We couldn’t get the first ball where we wanted it but we kept the move going, Alex Grant whipped a good cross into the box and Tsovolos managed to hook it into the net.
“In the second half we scrapped and we battled and we managed to win an ugly game – a bit like the first team did against Barnsley.
“The lads have listened and taken on board what we’ve told them. They’ve shown am amazing amount of improvement over the last few weeks but we’re not getting carried away because there’s still an awful lot of work to do.”
