Pompey Academy were comeback kings at Gosport for the second time in a week, as they beat Royal Artillery 3-2.

Sam Folarin bagged a brace and Spencer Spurway also found the target after a brace from Harry Beckley had given the Gunners a commanding interval lead.

The Privett Park contest was staged as a special historical fixture during the club’s 125th anniversary year.

That is because of the special role the opposition played in the formation of Portsmouth Football Club in 1898.

And the occasion saw the young Blues sporting salmon pink and maroon shirts, white shorts and black socks – the same colours the very first team wore all those years ago.

A Q&A session was held by the side of the pitch before the game, with head coach John Mousinho joined by Christian Saydee, Gavin Whyte and Kusini Yengi.

When the action began, Bastian Smith punched clear a free-kick that was swung in by the right from Tom Brookes, but most of the action was taking place at the other end.

Pompey won a series of corners that were taken by Mitch Aston and had to be scrambled to safety, while Jayden Keteku’s effort was saved by Chandler Harris.

But it was the Gunners who broke the deadlock on eight minutes, courtesy of Beckley’s effort from the edge of the box.

The hosts tried to hit back and when Aston sent in another corner, a header from Cody Howard rattled the crossbar.

Connor May then fired narrowly past the post before Luke Staight’s curler was superbly tipped over by Harris.

They were made to pay for their profligacy on 30 minutes, however, as a Ryan Lewis cross was not dealt with and Beckley tucked away the loose ball.

The Blues were still dominating possession and shots from their trialist and Kevin Bosaka were not far from finding the target.

And when Howard met yet another corner whipped in by Aston, his header was cleared from the line by Luke Holden.

Half Time: Pompey 0 Royal Artillery 2

Pompey set about trying to reduce their deficit once the game restarted and were soon on the attack.

And they were handed a goal on 53 minutes when Frank Maloney played a terrible pass back to his keeper.

It lacked the pace to get there and was intercepted by substitute FOLARIN, who calmly rounded Harris before slotting the ball into the net.

Then, just a few moments later, Staight was chopped down and Aston curled a 25-yard free-kick inches over the bar.

And skipper Jack Fox was soon given time and space to surge forward and hit a low shot that had to be beaten away by Harris.

A slew of substitutions from both sides halted any rhythm that had been built up, with Howard, Staight and Spurway the only starters to remain on the pitch for the Blues.

It was Beau Mullins who took over corner taking duties and his deliveries were also causing the Gunners plenty of problems.

Despite there now being plenty of under-16s on the pitch, Pompey were starting to apply a lot of pressure.

And it paid off on 77 minutes, as SPURWAY received a pass and hit a 25-yard shot that arrowed into the bottom corner.

There was almost another goal straight away, although this time a long-range Folarin curler was clawed away by Harris.

But the comeback was soon complete, as Tayo Singerr was shoved to the turf and FOLARIN converted from the spot.

That proved enough to secure the win and showed that on a night celebrating Pompey’s past, there was also plenty to look forward to in the future.
