Pompey Academy conceded a stoppage-time equaliser to draw at AFC Wimbledon in Merit League One.

They took the lead when Dan Murray advanced forward from midfield and sent in a drilled delivery for Harry Clout (pictured) to convert.

But with just seconds of the contest remaining, the hosts scored from a set-piece to ensure the spoils would be shared.

Lead professional development phase coach Sam Hudson said: “We started really well and dominated the first half, with plenty of shots and final third entries.

“We saw practically all of the ball, had the territorial advantage and there were also a lot of set-pieces.

“But we were a bit toothless with our final action and only managed to convert that into one effort on target.

“We made some changes – partly in preparation for the games we’ve got coming up – and brought on three lads from the under-15s, which is good experience for them.

"It was a real kick in the teeth not to come away with the win that we deserved, but it’s a lesson that you have to make the most of your opportunities."

“A bit of time in training has been spent on working on those inside spaces and trying to play through teams. That’s how our goal came about, which was pleasing.

“There were some other positive moments – Harvey Laidlaw put in a great delivery that Jayden Keteku was inches away from connecting with.

“We weren’t able to find that cushion, however, and despite remaining in control, it meant our opponents still had a chance.

“They piled on a lot of pressure for the final 15 minutes, with a lot of direct balls, and with the last kick of the game, a set-piece has been converted.

“It was a real kick in the teeth not to come away with the win that we deserved, but it’s a lesson that you have to make the most of your opportunities.

“We have to learn to kill games off when we’re dominant and now we need to regroup ahead of the weekend.”

Pompey: Smith (Grieves 46); Quarm (Bosaka 46), Howard (Sizer 46), Fox, Laidlaw; Aston, Staight (Thomas 69); Mottoh, Murray, Clout; Keteku (May 78)
