Mousinho: One Game At A Time

Boss looks ahead to Shrewsbury test

5 April 2024

Pompey could take another giant step towards League One promotion this weekend.

But John Mousinho prefers to focus on the task at hand, rather than be tempted by the bigger picture.

His side will be aiming to extend their 14-match unbeaten run when Shrewsbury make the trip down to the south coast.

And despite the finishing line nearing ever closer, dealing with this latest contest is all that matters for Mousinho.

The Blues boss said: “It’s impossible not to think about what could happen – you’d be lying if you said otherwise.

“But we have to take each game as it comes and so we’ll just focus on facing Shrewsbury and trying to win this one.

“Everything else takes care of itself and it’s a strange weekend because a couple of our rivals don’t play in the league.

“Our opponents are a different side to the one we played a few months ago and have had a change of manager since then, plus a few January signings.

“They have taken themselves away from the relegation zone because of some decent results in recent weeks.

“Paul Hurst knows exactly what he’s doing at this level and it’s opposition that we’ll have to be very wary of.”

Mousinho has been shortlisted for the League One Manager of the Season prize at the EFL Awards, while his skipper is named in the Player of the Season category.

He said: “These accolades are nice to receive, even though they’re not what we’re in this business for.

“I think that Marlon particularly deserves the recognition because he’s had an outstanding season and I certainly believe he’s been one of the best players in the league.”

Pompey’s treatment room is starting to empty, although there will be no new faces ready to face the Shrews.

Mousinho said: “There are a couple of bumps and bruises from Tuesday, but we’re otherwise all fine and we should have the same squad to select from.

“Callum Lang is coming along nicely. He’s back on the grass and we’re hoping he’ll train with the group next week.

“Tom Lowery is slightly further ahead of him and we should have both of them available to face Bolton.”
