Blues held at Stadium MK

31 March 2024

Pompey Women dropped points for just the second time this season after being held to a goalless draw at MK Dons.

There were plenty of chances to secure another National League victory, but opposition keeper Chloe Sansom made some key saves.

Emma Jones also struck the post for the Blues, who were watched by Jane and Michael Eisner – the respective chairs of the women’s and men’s sides.

Jay Sadler stuck with the same side that hit four goals past Rugby Borough without reply at Fratton Park the previous weekend.

The Blues looked to attack right from the start and Leeta Rutherford was denied by Sansom after meeting a Jones corner.

Sophie Quirk then collected a Riva Casley pass and sent in a cross that was agonisingly out of reach for Ava Rowbotham.

The opportunities kept coming and when Ella Humphrey met a Jones delivery, her header flew narrowly over.

And the same player was then denied by the impressive Sansom after getting on the end of a Quirk centre.

The pressure was relentless and there were not even 10 minutes played, with Jones going close from a couple more attempts.

But there was soon danger at the other end of the pitch and Dani Lane did well to halt Adekite Fatuga-Dada’s path to goal.

The Blues were soon back on the attack and after intercepting a wayward pass, Jones struck the post from an acute angle.

A low Quirk cross was soon deftly flicked towards the net by Jones, only for Sansom to again come to the Dons’ rescue.

The midfield were also trying their best to break the deadlock, with both Leeta Rutherford and Rowbotham seeing efforts fly narrowly off target.

It was a similar story once the action restarted following the interval and a shot on the turn from Jones was again kept out by Sansom.

Pompey were dominating possession, but almost came undone when a Tricia Gould strike crashed against the woodwork.

Humphrey then escaped down the right at the other end, driving into the box and picking out Georgie Freeland to drill inches past the post.

Daisy McLachlan replaced Humphrey just past the hour mark, as Sadler looked to inject some fresh energy into his forward line.

It was a defender who was next to go close, however, with Nicole Barrett’s attempt deflected behind following good work from Quirk.

Hannah Haughton was not being given much to do and Laura Mitchell could only divert a Rhianne Rush cross over the bar in a rare MK Dons attack.

The Blues almost made their pressure count late on, but when Jones collected a composed Rutherford pass, she was denied by Sansom from point-blank range.

They continued to pour forward as the seconds ticked down and the hosts had to be at their resolute best to hold on for a share of the spoils.

Pompey: Haughton (c); Barrett, Lane, Casley, Collins; Freeland (Hall 71), Rutherford, Rowbotham; Humphrey (McLachlan 63), Jones, Quirk
