BAKER: THERE'S STILL A WILL TO WIN

22 April 2017

Midfielder says Pompey won't ease off

With automatic promotion in the bag, Pompey have achieved their ultimate ambition.

But Carl Baker does not expect to see them take their foot off the accelerator before the end of the campaign.

He scored in a 2-1 home victory over Cambridge to ensure that the title is not out of the Blues’ reach with two games remaining.

And the midfielder’s personal pride would not allow him to give anything less than 100 percent on the pitch.

He said: “It was great to secure promotion on Monday, but we’re still looking to win games of football.

“We have pride in our own performances and want to be professional, while it’s always good to send the fans home happy after collecting three points.

“There’s also still a chance that we can catch Plymouth and possible even Doncaster, so we’ll look to continue this good run.

“We haven’t been messing about in training ahead of the game – we treated it as we would any other fixture.

“There have been tough times during the season – which you’ll always have – but it’s been really enjoyable overall.

“We’ve got a close-knit group and the fans are the best thing about the club, so we’re glad we’ve given them what they deserve.”

Baker side-footed home Enda Stevens’ low cross midway through the first half to take his personal tally for the season to eight.

He said: “It’s great to score – especially in front of more than 18,000 fans at Fratton Park.

“There was a party atmosphere and my family came down to watch the game, so I’m delighted they were able to see me get a goal.”

Another great 3 points. Swear Fratton was swaying today, quality atmosphere. 👏
