ROSE HOPES BLUES CAN BLOOM

30 July 2016

Midfielder still wants more after positive friendly display

Danny Rose feels that Pompey can take plenty of confidence from their final friendly of the summer.

They dominated against Championship hosts Bristol City for long periods of the goalless stalemate at Ashton Gate.

But despite carving out a host of second half chances, the Blues were not quite able to nick a winner.

And Rose hopes they will find a more clinical touch when the 2016/17 campaign gets underway against Carlisle next week.

The summer signing said: “We got what we needed from the game and it was a useful work-out against decent opposition.

“Bristol City are a Championship side, but we more than held our own for large parts of the game.

“They had a spell in the second half when they put a bit of pressure on us, but Fordey didn’t have too many saves to make.

“It was another step towards where we want to be and we have to make sure we’re at it next Saturday.

“We couldn’t quite get the goal that we wanted, although overall I felt that we gave a good account of ourselves.

“That possession football is something that’s been instilled into us, but we just need to work on finishing it off.

“Teams are going to sit behind the ball when they come to Fratton Park and we’ll have to get past them.”

It was a pleasant homecoming for Bristol-born Rose – even if he did grow up supporting city rivals Rovers.

He said: “It’s nice to come here and see some familiar faces – an old school teacher of mine even went to the game to see me.

“My family will have to travel down to Fratton Park to watch me, so it was good for them to only come a short distance.”
