DOYLE: FOCUS ON CARLISLE

24 February 2017

Skipper not looking too far ahead

Pompey are on the cusp of a hectic stage of the season.

Saturday’s clash with Carlisle starts a run of seven games in the space of just 22 days, including three midweek fixtures.

It is a spell that could have a big impact on the Blues’ hopes of securing automatic promotion from League Two.

But Michael Doyle is not looking past facing the Cumbrians, who currently occupy third spot in the table.

Pompey’s skipper said: “There are so many points to play for in quick succession as we look to make up ground on the sides above us.

“I have a feeling that we’re going to finish this season strongly, so hopefully that will be the case.

“That's because we have so much quality on the bench, with people who can come on and totally change the game.

“But I’ve been guilty in the past of looking at all the fixtures ahead and trying to rack up points, so it’s important we take each game as it comes.

“We need to focus on what’s directly ahead of us – and at the moment that’s Carlisle.

“We’re in a really good place at the moment, so we need to keep that going and continue to drive on.

“There’s so much to play for between now and at the season. We go into every game looking to win and I don’t think that will change on Saturday.”

Pompey have conceded just one goal in their past three matches, but Doyle has warned against complacency.

He said: “It’s important to stay on track and just keep doing what we’re doing. We defend as a team and it’s not only about the back four.

“We play on the front foot and always try to win games, although we’ve also been strong, resolute and organised.

“But the minute you start to read too much into that it can come back to bite you, so it’s vital we keep our focus.”
