Boss looking for victory against Cambridge
It is mission accomplished for Pompey after securing automatic promotion to League One.
They completed the job with victory at Notts County on Easter Monday and can now look forward to life at a higher level.
But there are still three games of the campaign remaining, with Cambridge visiting Fratton Park on Saturday before matches against Mansfield and Cheltenham.
And Paul Cook has insisted that, despite their achievement, his side will not take their foot off the accelerator.
The Blues boss said: “We owe it to ourselves and the rest of the teams competing for the play-off places to make sure we finish the season strongly.
“Yes we are delighted to win promotion, but we also want to pick up more points from our remaining games.
“Cambridge are a great side with some top players and struggled with injuries to key members of their squad earlier on.
“Now they’ve built up a bit of momentum and it’s always a game I’d looked upon as being a difficult one.
“We’re looking forward to the match and I’m sure there will be a carnival atmosphere at Fratton Park.
“We should all enjoy that, but from the minute the referee blows that whistle, we have to be at it because we still harbour ambitions of catching the sides above us.”
Cook was taken aback by the celebrations that occurred at Meadow Lane and, later, in the Victory Lounge on Monday.
He said: “The reaction to the promotion and the reception we got when we arrived back at Fratton Park has been amazing.
“It’s fantastic to see what this club means to the people of this city and I’m really pleased for everyone.
“We’ve been put down for quite a number of years now, so it’s about time that people had smiles on their face.
“It was a more difficult job than I envisaged when I first came here and there have been some lows along the way, but it’s certainly all been worthwhile.”
Matt Clarke and Danny Rose could feature against Cambridge after recovering from the knocks that kept them sidelined for the Notts County game.
Cook said: “We’ve got a fully-fit squad, but there are some lads I would like to see in action, like Nicke Kabamba and Stanley Aborah. Whoever we pick, it will be a very strong team."
