COOK: WIN ALL THAT MATTERS

25 March 2017

Boss reflects on Newport victory

It was not the most convincing victory in Paul Cook’s 100 games as Pompey manager.

But the only thing of real importance was that his side took all three points from their Fratton clash with struggling Newport.

Kyle Bennett and Kal Naismith scored either side of the interval to leave the hosts in a comfortable position.

Alex Samuel replied for the Welsh outfit, however, to ensure a nervy finale and there was relief when referee Tim Robinson blew the final whistle.

Cook admitted that the result was not as comfortable as it might have been, but was happy with the performance of his players.

The Blues boss said: “The three points are huge against a side who were fighting for their lives and didn’t leave anything out on the pitch.

“There’s possibly an argument to say that they deserved a draw, but the most important thing is that we won the game.

“A massive well done to the lads and there are seven matches remaining now, with so much left to play for.

“They were a little bit flat in the dressing room after the final whistle, but they’ve got no reason to be.

“They’re all representing this club in a really good way at the minute and long may that continue.

“It’s going to be nervy at times, but we’ll keep going and try to give these fans the success they really want.

“So let’s just enjoy this result tonight and then we can focus on a difficult game at Hartlepool next week.”

Bennett has now scored in each of his past four appearances, despite netting only once previously this season.

Cook said: “He’s in such a good place at the moment. He’s just had a second child and is dead happy, which shines through on the pitch.

“You could see that he wasn’t fully fit and was a bit tentative at times, but he’s doing great and is starting to become a fans’ favourite.”
