LATE HEARTACHE FOR LADIES

12 September 2016

Blues beaten at Swindon

Pompey Ladies conceded in the seventh minute of stoppage-time to lose a seven-goal thriller at Swindon.

They fell behind early on thanks to an audacious strike from out wide by Abby Picton that drifted over Courtney Trodd and into the net.

But the Blues levelled thanks to a stunning effort of their own soon after, with Charlotte Benson sending the ball into the top corner after it was deflected into her path.

It was the hosts who led at the break, however, as Chyna Collings completed a fine passing move with a neat finish past Trodd.

And it was Collings who converted Georgia Walters’ corner early in the second half to extend Swindon’s advantage.

But Pompey refused to throw in the towel and reduced the deficit on 52 minutes when Gemma Hillier hooked home from close range after the Robins failed to deal with a set-piece.

They then levelled on the hour mark, as Eilidh Currie presented substitute Samantha Quayle with a simple finish.

Both sides went in search of a winner as the game entered its closing stages, with Hillier grazing the post and Trodd making a couple of fine saves.

But, with a draw looking likely, the keeper failed to claim a Walters corner and Alison Witts headed in the winner.

Pompey: Trodd, Benson, Rutherford, Tonks, Bazan, Sievwright, Bloomfield (Taylor 70), Currie, Hillier, Stephens (Capel-Watson 61), Sherwood (Quayle 36)
