Stars to attend Petersfield launch of new booklets

A series of season-by-season booklets, containing 110-word reports with line-ups of both teams from all Pompey’s matches from 1920, is about to be officially launched.

Several former Blues stars will be at Petersfield Bookshop – owned by Pompey’s most well-known supporter John Westwood – tomorrow (September 30).

They will be joined by lifelong fan Roger Holmes, who has spent the best part of 10 years compiling the reports of more than 4,250 games.

The signing session will kick-off at midday and end at 5pm. Alan Knight, Ray Crawford, Dave Munks, Pat Neil, Mick Travers, Lee Bradbury and Guy Butters will all be there, while several other ex-players have promised to do their best to attend.

The booklets have been produced with the club’s blessing and are produced in individual seasons.

As well as the match reports and team line-ups, which include all the players’ first names, each season booklet also show that particular campaign’s final league table and the Pompey players’ appearance and goal record. They are priced at just £2 each.

They run from 1920/21 – Pompey’s first season in the Football League – up to 2015/16, excluding the war years.

All the club’s senior matches are featured, with games in the Premier League, Football League, play-offs, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup, Anglo-Italian Cup, Full Members Cup, Football League Trophy and the Southern Floodlit Cup.

Roger said: “I have had many people already requesting to purchase the complete collection, but I have made them into individual seasons so that fans can pay out as little as £2 and collect the set over time.

“They may also just want the successful campaigns or like a souvenir of the first season supporting the club. Former players or their families can buy booklets of the seasons in which they played for Pompey.”

The booklets are an ideal gift for any Pompey supporter and should you wish to purchase sets of either pre-war, post-war or the complete collection, then discount rates are available.
