MATCH PREVIEW: POMPEY v BARNET

23 September 2016

All you need to know about League Two clash

A run of four successive victories was finally brought to an end at Accrington last week.

So now Pompey will look to get back to winning ways when they host Barnet on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

Paul Cook’s side dropped to fifth following their Crown Ground defeat, but are still just a single point outside the automatic promotion spots.

Their next opponents are down in 14th position, having collected 10 points from their opening seven League Two fixtures.

But the Bees – who are led by former Blues midfielder Martin Allen – have a game in hand over every side above them in the table.

That is because their visit to Newport earlier this month was abandoned at half-time due to torrential rain.

They were leading at the time, courtesy of a goal after 23 seconds – that has since been expunged from the record books – from John Akinde.

Barnet have yet to lose on their travels so far this term and were 1-0 victors at Mansfield on their last trip away from The Hive a fortnight ago.

There have only been four previous meetings between the sides and both won on their own patch last season.

TEAM NEWS
Drew Talbot (hamstring) is definitely out for Pompey, while there are doubts over strikers Noel Hunt (groin) and Curtis Main (head).

But Adam Buxton, Matt Clarke, Brandon Haunstrup and Jack Whatmough all came through Tuesday’s reserve victory over Newport unscathed.

Former Blues players John Akinde and Bondz N’Gala could feature for the visitors, who have Gavin Hoyte, Michael Gash and James Pearson all sidelined with knee injuries.
