Coaching role available within the Pompey Academy

The club have a vacancy for the newly-created position of Head of Coaching within its Academy.

This is a demanding full-time role and will be based at our training ground in Portsmouth with significant travel required throughout the south of England.

The Academy have produced a significant number of professional players who are now at first team level with this and other clubs. We believe this exciting new role will enhance our capabilities in young player development.

The purpose of the role is to establish and manage a sustainable system and approach to coach development within the Academy. The applicant must be able to demonstrate that they can develop coaches so that they improve and perform to the best of their potential and are consequently able to maximise the potential of the players that they work with. Necessarily, the incumbent will performance manage the day-to-day performance of Lead Phase Coaches.

Importantly, the person appointed to this role will take responsibility for, and manage their self-development in order to ensure their own knowledge of the sport and that of their subordinate coaches is leading edge at all times.

The willingness and passion of the individual to gain further qualification, knowledge and experience must be ably demonstrated. Clearly we expect the Head of Coaching to build sustainable and productive relationships with key staff throughout the club, parents, universities and the various leagues.

In addition to the result areas noted, the Head of Coaching will, when needed, provide hands-on coaching to our Academy teams, give practical demonstrations and presentations, as well as identify and provide or facilitate training for self and subordinates using a structured system of analysis and provision that is accurately recorded and acted upon in Documented Action Plans for individuals and the Academy Performance Plan as appropriate.

High levels of skill in providing one-to-one feedback and experience of working in and leading multi-discipline teams are necessities. Experience of preparing and managing budgets will need to be demonstrated.

To be considered for the role, applicants must hold a current UEFA ‘A’ Licence or Pro Licence and can demonstrate success in coaching and mentoring elite teams. Qualifications to Master’s Degree level in psychology, pedagogy or education are desirable.
