MATCH PREVIEW: YEOVIL v POMPEY

30 August 2016

All you need to know about Checkatrade Trophy clash

Pompey start their Checkatrade Trophy campaign with a group stage fixture at Yeovil tonight (7.45pm kick-off).

Paul Cook’s men also have home fixtures against a Reading under-23 side and Bristol Rovers to come.

The new format of the competition means that a penalty shoot-out will take place in the event of a draw, with the winners earning a bonus point.

The sides who finish in the top two of each of the 16 groups will then progress to the knockout stages.

Pompey faced Yeovil in the tournament’s previous guise two seasons ago, when Jed Wallace’s brace and a Craig Westcarr stunner sealed a 3-1 victory.

That is one of five previous competitive meetings between the teams, with the first taking place as recently as 2012.

Both of last season’s clashes finished all square, with a goalless draw at Fratton Park followed by a 1-1 stalemate in Somerset.

The Glovers won their first two matches of the season – including an EFL Cup triumph at Walsall – but since then they have drawn once and lost on four occasions.

TEAM NEWS
Adam Buxton (ankle), Brandon Haunstrup (collarbone) and Jack Whatmough (knee) are all out for Pompey.

But Matt Clarke has recovered from a groin problem, while Liam O’Brien is set to be handed a debut between the sticks.

Yeovil will be without Ryan Hedges, who is away on international duty, and have Ryan Dickson (ankle), Josh Ezewele (knee), Alex Lacey (arm), Darren Ward (knee) and Francois Zoko (hip) on the sidelines.
