ON THE ROAD AGAIN

A look at Pompey's 2015/16 travels

Pompey fans will be pleased to note some relatively short away journeys added to the League Two calendar.

A first ever visit to The Hive to face Barnet is on the cards during the 2015/16 campaign following the Londoners’ Conference Premier title glory.

And Bristol Rovers – who suffered relegation on the final day two years ago – have also made a Football League return by triumphing in the play-offs.

They beat Grimsby on penalties at Wembley earlier this month, having previously seen off Forest Green over two legs.

Less joyous about a return to the fourth tier of English football will be those sides relegated from League One.

Notts County still represents a lengthy trip for Blues followers, but visits to Crawley, Leyton Orient and Yeovil will all be welcomed.

Travelling supporters can also wave goodbye to two of the more mammoth treks, with Bury and Tranmere exiting the division at either end of the table.

That is not to say there are no longer daunting journeys that lie in wait.

At one point last term it looked like Hartlepool and Carlisle might bite the dust – a welcome relief for those not keen on making two 650-mile round trips in one season.

But both survived and Cheltenham – virtually neighbours by comparison – instead joined Rovers in the relegation slots.

Pompey fans will only have to travel north of the midlands on three other occasions in the league, though, with the now familiar haunts of Accrington, Morecambe and York all on the menu.

There are still two trips down to Devon to face Exeter and Plymouth, a sojourn to Wales to face Newport and a hike up to Mansfield.

But AFC Wimbledon, Cambridge, Dagenham & Redbridge, Luton, Northampton, Oxford, Stevenage and Wycombe all add to the distinctly southern look to League Two.

That should make Pompey fans smile a bit – although they would be a whole lot happier with a few more points on the road than last season.
