McCAREY: CONCENTRATION IS KEY

Keeper looks back on the start of his Pompey spell

Aaron McCarey has not been overly troubled since arriving at Pompey last month.

With the Blues dominating possession in every game they have played this season, the opposition have been limited to few scoring chances.

The 23-year-old’s debut came in a victory at Bristol Rovers that took his new club to the top of the League Two table.

But Pompey have collected just one point from their two most recent matches and McCarey is hoping their luck will change at Cambridge this weekend.

He said: “I’ve gone long spells without having much to do in the game, but that’s an important time for a goalkeeper.

“You have to keep your concentration and be ready for when a chance falls to the opposition.

“It’s been frustrating watching on recently because I don’t think we’ve done much wrong, but haven’t got the results we would like.

“The other team have been defending well and getting men behind the ball – it’s one of those situations where if you score once then you probably go on to get a few more.

“We’ve got to stay patient, while remembering that there was a fantastic start to the season and there is still a long way to go.

“I’m sure that, as the campaign progresses, sides will be scrapping for points and forced to open up a bit more.

“We’ve been playing really well, so I don’t really think we should be changing what we’ve been doing up to this point.”

Pompey travel to the Abbey Stadium on Saturday to face a side who have won just one of their last eight league matches.

McCarey said: “Cambridge are quite a physical team and will look to get plenty of balls into the box, so we’ll have to defend well and take our chances at the other end.”
