19 October 2014

Chaplin hits hat-trick in Robins rout

“We used the ball efficiently and were patient in possession, drawing the Cheltenham defenders out before playing in incisive passes.

“These lads want to become professional footballers and so it’s important they learn how take charge of games.

Academy manager Mark Kelly said: “We changed the system, as we like to do every few weeks to help with the players’ education.

Karnell Chambers did reduce the Robins’ deficit, but Chaplin then scored a spot-kick to complete his treble before Lewis Gill slid home Pompey's sixth.

The goals kept coming after the interval and Brandon Haunstrup added a fourth when he bent a free-kick into the bottom corner.

The prolific Chaplin (pictured) then took over, doubling the advantage with a neat finish, before nipping between two defenders to net again.

Brandon Joseph-Buadi opened the scoring in fine fashion with a fine strike from 25 yards.

Conor Chaplin hit a hat-trick as Pompey Academy romped to their biggest victory of the season with a 6-1 triumph at Cheltenham. Bass; Rwakarambwe (Haitham 46), Field, Saidy (Davis 46), Haunstrup; Nilsen, Granger, May (Oxlade-Chamberlain 62); Joseph-Buadi, Chaplin; GillPompey:

“It was also good to see such clinical finishing and dynamic movement in the final third. We took our chances well.”
