MIXED FEELINGS FOR AWFORD

Boss says Pompey unlucky not to beat Wycombe

Most fans heading to Adams Park would have taken a point when they left their homes this morning.

Pompey were without a victory since November and facing a Wycombe side sitting at the summit of the League Two table.

But there was a sense of what might have been as they returned to their cars after the final whistle.

They would have watched their side totally dominant the Chairboys before the break and create plenty of chances.

So Andy Awford was among those with mixed emotions about a goalless draw.

The Blues boss said: “It was a very good performance and we deserved the point without a shadow of a doubt.

“But we’ve got to start turning some of these draws into wins – that’s three in our last five games now.

“I think you could argue that we deserved all three points because our levels were fantastic.

“We should have been out of sight at half-time – I’m not sure you’ll find anyone in the ground who would disagree with that.

“There were about eight clear-cut chances that we counted on the bench – not half-chances.

“We really should have taken some of those, but the play that led up to them was brilliant.

“We carved them open time after time, although Wycombe did come into it a bit more after the break.

“They’re not top of the league for no reason, but we stood up to that and saw the game out quite comfortably.”

Pompey switched to a 3-5-2 formation, with Jack Whatmough and skipper Ben Chorley recalled to the side to join Paul Robinson at the back.

Awford said: “I wanted to play a back three because we didn’t concede too many when we did that earlier in the season.

“But the clean sheet wasn’t all about those defenders – the hard work started from the front and everyone put in a shift.

“You can talk about shape all you like, but it’s about the players at the end of the day and ours were fantastic.”
