AWFORD IS APRIL'S TOP BOSS

2 May 2014

League Two award for Pompey manager

Andy Awford has been named Sky Bet League Two Manager of the Month for April.

The Blues boss saw off competition from Southend’s Phil Brown, Chesterfield’s Paul Cook and Northampton’s Chris Wilder to claim the prize.

Awford led Pompey to 13 points from a possible 15 while in caretaker charge during April, taking them from the threat of relegation to the top half of the table.

He said: “I’m accepting this award, but in a reality it’s a big team effort. Our form this month is down to the hard work of a lot of people and it’s great that we’ve received recognition for that.”

Dave Bassett, who chairs the Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel, said: “When Andy took over the club was in a very precarious position. He has now taken them well clear of the danger area.”

Sky Bet head of football Paul Wiggins added: “An unbeaten April has seen Pompey secure Sky Bet League Two safety. Hopefully the form can be carried over into next season and get them back up the league ladder.”

Bassett and Wiggins were joined on the judging panel by Sky Sports’ Football League expert Don Goodman, Football League chief operating officer Andy Williamson and League Manager’s director Olaf Dixon.

Danny Hollands was nominated for the April Player of the Month prize, but lost out to Fleetwood’s Josh Morris.
