AWFORD: MORE OF THE SAME, PLEASE

Boss looking to build momentum at Shrewsbury

Their next opponents also tasted midweek success with an emphatic 5-0 rout of promotion favourites Bury.

Pompey ended a six-match winless run by beating Stevenage 3-2 at Fratton Park on Tuesday evening.

Andy Awford has urged his troops not to rest on their laurels ahead of Saturday’s Shrewsbury test.

“We didn’t go overboard following a bad day at the office at Bury last Saturday, so I’m not going to do the same following a good win.

“But although there were so many pleasing aspects to our performance, I’m not going to go over the top about it.

The Blues boss said: “The win on Tuesday gave everyone a lift – me, the players, the fans and the whole club.

So Awford is not getting carried away, but still believes that his side can put a run together.

“But I’m hoping the game will give us the base on which to progress and build a bit of momentum.

“We’ve shown the players a video of some of the positives that came out of the other night and we want them to go out and show the same attitude at Shrewsbury.

“It doesn’t matter who we’re playing and whether it’s home or away – if we show a similar desire then we’ll be okay.

Awford said: “I watched them at Leicester in the cup earlier in the season and so I’m well aware it’s going to be a difficult game.

Shrewsbury currently sit fifth in the League Two table, with 24 points from their first 14 fixtures.

“We need to play with the same tempo and intensity and I’ll make sure that the lads are ready to do just that.” “But they have a big pitch and a good surface, so we have a chance to play and impose ourselves. We need to do what we know we’re capable of.”
