CARSON: BELIEF WAS KEY

27 April 2014

Keeper says Blues are full of confidence

Trevor Carson believes Pompey’s recent form was behind their incredible Bury comeback.

The Blues were trailing 3-0 early in the second half and 4-2 with just a few minutes remaining at the JD Stadium.

But goals from Sonny Bradley and Wes Fogden – the latter deep into stoppage-time – saw them salvage a point and climb to 11th in the League Two table.

And Carson – who was allowed to play despite being on loan from the Shakers – felt the high of five successive triumphs gave them enough belief to keep on fighting.

The goalkeeper said: “You think I’d be down and despondent after conceding four goals in a game.

“But after what happened at the end I’m as buzzing as Foggy was after scoring the equaliser.

“Bury looked comfortable at 3-0, but it just goes to show what you can do with a bit of confidence. That’s something we had plenty of after winning five on the spin.

“I’m so happy for the fans because they deserve it for the commitment they’ve shown us throughout the season.

“It was quite a strange scenario for me to be on loan from a club and play against them, but you don’t have to question where my loyalties are.

“I was 100 per cent with Pompey and delighted that we were able to get back in the game and take a point.

“There was a bit of stick coming from the fans, but you expect that – especially after getting an equaliser in the last minute.”

Carson’s loan deal expires at the end of the season and he revealed that talks have yet to begin over a permanent switch to Fratton Park.

The Northern Irishman said: “We haven’t had a minute to breathe in the last few weeks and have just been concentrating on getting over that safety line.

“It’s been relentless and we haven’t been able to sit down and talk about it yet.

“I can sleep well knowing that I’ve given everything during my time here, so we’ll just have to see what happens.”
