CHAPLIN: WHAT A FEELING

11 April 2015

Mixed feelings for forward

It was a day of disappointment for the yellow-shirted Pompey players, not to mention the 652 fans who had made the long trip to the Globe Arena.

A 3-1 defeat at Morecambe meant the Blues have still won just twice on their league travels this term.

But there was one person who could take some consolation from the afternoon.

Conor Chaplin has only made a handful of appearances after signing his first professional deal earlier in the season.

The teenage forward opened his goalscoring account with a confident finish, however, and admitted it was an emotional experience.

“It’s the best feeling ever,” said Chaplin. “Although obviously I would have preferred it to come in better circumstances.

“I’d moved out to the left from a central area and I took a touch and just tried to hit it across the goalkeeper.

“I got my head down and got a good connection on the ball and fortunately it went in.

“It’s been a pretty good season for me after signing my contract in October and then breaking into the first team.

“The next target for me is to get my first start, but I’m just enjoying all the valuable experience I’m getting.

“I’m looking to kick on and have a career in the game, but it’s not going to be easy and I’ll have to work hard.”

Chaplin is now looking to emulate some of the stars he used to watch at Fratton Park.

He said: “I’m not local, but I’ve been at the club since the age of six and consider myself a Pompey boy now.

“I grew up watching great players like Jermain Defoe, who’s a small player like me and scores a lot of goals.

“This is a huge club and I was in awe of the guys that were around the place, so to wear the shirt now is an amazing feeling.”
