DEVERA LOOKING AHEAD

26 July 2014

Ebbsfleet defeat doesn't concern defender

The Conference South side proved more clinical in front of goal, with Charlie Sheringham netting a brace and Billy Bricknell adding a header.

It was the first time the Blues had been beaten in pre-season following comfortable victories against Hawks, Bognor and Thurrock.

Joe Devera is not worried by Pompey’s 3-0 defeat at Ebbsfleet.

The defender said: “It was a hard game that really tested our fitness and was certainly tough on the legs.

But Devera insists that fitness is Pompey’s main concern as the League Two opener at Exeter draws closer.

“It’s not something that’s too concerning and certainly isn’t a result we’ll be going over in too much detail.

“We’ve had a great week of training in Colchester leading up to it and have put a lot of work in.

“Some of the goals we conceded show that there’s still a lot of work to be done, but our fitness is improving all the time.

“We’re still not at the stage where we’re playing a full 90 minutes and these games are all about building up to the first league game.

“Every game at the moment is almost like a training session as we get closer to that Exeter match.”

Pompey have two home friendlies to end their pre-season campaign – starting with the visit of Bournemouth on Tuesday night. Devera said: “That’s going to be our biggest test yet, but we’ve got a lot of work under our belts and I think we can do well.”
