STEVENS: SOLID FOUNDATIONS REQUIRED

Defender looking to tighten up at home

Pompey have impressed fans and neutrals alike with their attacking, passing play this season.

But Enda Stevens feels that they also need to add some solidity into the mix.

The Blues lost their unbeaten league record with a 2-1 defeat at home to Exeter on Tuesday night.

And while Stevens is happy with his and Pompey’s form, he insists that there is still plenty of room for improvement.

The left-back said: “We’ve been a bit slack in some games – it’s been a case of getting caught on the counter-attack rather than teams dominating against us.

“That’s something we’ve looked at because we need to be a bit more solid when we’re playing at home.

“I’m pleased with the way I’ve been playing, but still feel there’s more to come – from me and the team.

“I’m just trying to keep my head down, stay concentrated and try to put in decent performances for the side.”

Pompey will try to return to winning ways on Saturday when they host a Yeovil side sitting just above the bottom two.

Stevens said: “We know that every game’s tough in this division, so we’ll give them plenty of respect.

“They’ll look to frustrate us and put us under pressure, so it’s up to us to concentrate on our own performance.

“We had plenty of opportunities against Exeter on Tuesday, but it wasn’t our night, so we need to keep doing what we’ve been doing against Yeovil.

“I’m confident that we’ll always be able to create chances, so it’s just a case of taking them, while keeping a clean sheet at the other end.”
