ERTL: WE'RE GETTING FITTER

22 July 2014

Midfielder says Blues are growing stronger ahead of Exeter opener

Pompey’s pre-season record reads: Played three, won three, with 12 goals scored and just one conceded.

But Johnny Ertl is not too concerned with results at this time of year.

The Austrian is more worried about building up his fitness ahead of next month’s League Two opener at Exeter.

He was one of several players to stay on the field for 60 minutes in a 2-0 victory at Thurrock.

Ertl: “The most important thing in pre-season is to get minutes under your belt.

“A lot of players had an hour and then it will probably swap around on Saturday so the rest get an hour as well.

“We’re continuing to build those fitness levels until we get to a stage where we can play 90 minutes.

“There have been a few new players come in over the summer and we’re also getting a feel of how they play.”

Craig Westcarr grabbed both the goals against Thurrock, striking late in the first half before being substituted.

It takes the new signing’s pre-season tally to four and Ertl is confident he can prove a hit at Pompey.

He said: “Craig seems to be really calm in the box and knows how to finish, which is an important thing.

“He’s a smashing lad as well and has settled into the squad really well, so I’m sure he can have a good season.”
