ERTL: WHAT A FEELING

20 September 2014

Goal hero revels in first Fratton strike

Johnny Ertl showcased a nifty dance routine when he opened his goalscoring account at Cheltenham last season.

But he stuck to a simple fist pump after netting for the first time at Fratton against Wycombe.

The Austrian came off the bench to convert Dan Butler’s corner and ensure a share of the spoils after Sam Wood had fired the visitors ahead.

And Ertl was pleased with his input, even if he was frustrated that the Blues could not go on to grab a winner.

Pompey’s club captain said: “We showed great character to come back after falling behind, but were disappointed that we couldn’t go on to win.

“I did really enjoyed the experience of scoring for the first time at Fratton Park, though.

“To get the goal in front of all those people was an amazing feeling and I’m glad I could make a contribution.

“This time I kept the celebration pretty low-key – I was just happy that I scored!

“I thought we could build on the goal and go on to get all three points, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.

“But Wycombe are a decent side who play good football and showed why they’re high up in the table.”

Ertl has only started three matches this season, but has no complaints about having to bide his time.

He said: “You have to be ready and prepare as best as you can because you don’t know when you’ll be needed.

“The gaffer rotates the team, but we’re all together as a squad and everyone wants to grab their opportunity with both hands.”
