EVANS: WE DESERVED THAT

30 August 2015

Goalscorer pleased with Luton display

It took until the 90th minute for Pompey to grab the winning goal at Luton.

Substitute Matt Tubbs pounced after Elliot Justham had pushed away Conor Chaplin’s shot to secure a 2-1 triumph.

And the man who opened the scoring at Kenilworth Road felt that the visitors were well worth all three points.

Gareth Evans had fired the Blues ahead early on before Craig Mackail-Smith levelled from the spot and was pleased with his side’s performance.

The winger said: “I thought we dominated the game and got what we deserved in the end.

“We were on top for most of the match and just had to keep knocking on the door until we got the winner.

“With Luton also tipped for promotion, we didn’t expect them to sit off us as much as they did, but that’s something we’ll have to get used to.

“For my goal, the ball came in and the defender just cleared it against one of his team-mates.

“It dropped nicely for me and so I hit it – it certainly won’t go down as one of the best goals ever scored, but I’ll take it.

“It’s contributed towards us getting the result, so that’s great. The most important thing is that we got the three points.”

Pompey are unbeaten after five League Two fixtures and sit fourth in the table, but Evans knows there is plenty more work to do.

He said: “We’ve just got to keep doing what we’ve been doing and make sure that, come the end of the season, we’re there or thereabouts.

“It’s a case of taking it game by game, although the results we’ve got in August set us up nicely for next month.”
