ROBERTS: DEFENSIVE SIDES DIFFICULT TO BREAK DOWN

3 October 2015

Roberts annoyed by draw with Yeovil

It was a frustrated Fratton Park the greeted the referee’s final whistle.

Another packed crowd had watched their side held to a goalless draw by League Two strugglers Yeovil.

The visitors seemed happy to let their hosts keep possession and got plenty of men behind the ball.

But Pompey struggled to find a way through the sea of bodies and it was not until the closing stages that they applied a meaningful period of approach.

And Gary Roberts was feeling just as irritated as the fans at having to settle for a point against the Glovers.

The midfielder said: “It was a tough afternoon for us, but we worked our socks off and didn’t really do too much wrong.

“It’s another team who have come here with no intention of winning the game, but just try to stop us.

“Fair play to Yeovil because they managed to frustrate us and left here with a point.

“When sides set up with 11 men behind the ball then it is hard to break them down, but that’s part of the game.

“They can’t do that when they’re at home and in front of their own fans, which is why we’ve been able to open teams up on the road.

“There will be a stage in the season when teams need wins and will have to come out of their own half here – that’s when we can expose them.

“We need to stay patient and try to find that little bit of magic, but unfortunately it just didn’t happen for us.

“So we’ve got to be bigger and better and work out how we can break them down at Fratton Park.

“We had a few decent chances that we weren’t able to put away – hopefully there will be a different outcome at Cambridge next Saturday.”
