UMOTONG TREBLE DOWNS GILLS

27 April 2015

Title moves closer for Ladies

Pompey Ladies edged closer to the title after fighting from behind to win 4-1 at Gillingham.

With rivals Brighton dropping points at West Ham, the Blues require just four points from their remaining two games to claim the Premier League Southern Division crown.

But it was the hosts who broke the deadlock before the break thanks to a stunning long-range effort from Lauren Phillips.

It took the second half introduction of top scorer Ini Umotong to spur Pompey into action.

She levelled early in the second half after the Gills had failed to clear a cross before latching on to a Gemma Hillier through ball and netting again.

And Umotong completed her hat-trick on 83 minutes by heading home a pin-point cross from Molly Clark.

She then turned provider, teeing-up Hillier to complete a resounding victory deep into stoppage-time.

Blues boss Perry Northeast said: “The girls played really well from start to finish against a resolute Gillingham side.

“They still had plenty to play for themselves and were throwing their bodies in front of the ball from minute one.

“Their goal came completely against the run of play, but we stayed calm and patient.

“At half-time there was no shouting or screaming and nobody was blaming anyone else because we had been so dominant.

“Ini will no doubt steal the headlines for her performance and rightly so. She was disappointed to start on the bench, but produced a gutsy performance and some great finishing.

“Brighton dropped points, but we’re not looking at the table just yet – our only focus is QPR on Sunday.”
