HOLLANDS: THAT WAS UNLUCKY

25 October 2014

Midfielder curses Blues’ misfortune at Shrewsbury

He said: “We set up well and worked very hard, although maybe we could have got a second goal.

And Hollands was left frustrated that a positive display at Greenhous Meadow ultimately counted for nothing.

It was a blow for the visitors, who started brightly and took the lead through Jed Wallace’s spot-kick before James Wesolowski equalised.

The Blues were beaten 2-1 at Shrewsbury after Connor Goldson mis-hit his cross and inadvertently sent the ball flying into the top corner.

Danny Hollands hopes Pompey’s improved performances will lead to a change in fortune.

“But that didn’t happen, Shrewsbury started to get a bit more possession and we conceded a sloppy equaliser.

“They then had a lot of the ball without really going anywhere, which you don’t really expect coming to a place like this.

“But in the second half, their lad’s got the ball out of his feet and is looking to cross it when it hits his big toe and goes into the top corner.

“Losing to a freak goal like that is frustrating and shows that the luck isn’t really going our way at the moment.

“But hopefully the tide will start to turn and we’ll get our own share of good fortune throughout the season.

“Shrewsbury haven’t lost at home this season, but we played well and matched them in every department.

“We’ve looked a lot better in the last couple of matches, although of course there are things we have to improve on.

“We just have to look forward now, work hard in training and try to get three points against Carlisle next Saturday.”

Shrewsbury failed to deal with Danny Hollands’ long throws throughout the encounter and the midfielder is happy to be a threat from set-pieces. “You need as many options as you can in football and if that’s one of them, then great.”

He said: “If the defenders are struggling with it and it’s something the manager wants to use then we’ll do it.
