HOLMES LAUDS FRATTON FAITHFUL

4 May 2014

Winger wants to reward fans next season

Ricky Holmes has praised Pompey’s support in League Two this season.

More than 18,000 fans packed into Fratton Park to watch the final match of the 2013/14 campaign against Plymouth.

The Blues’ average attendance is more than double that of the Pilgrims – the next best backed side in the fourth tier.

And Holmes – who was named Pompey’s Player of the Season before kick-off – hopes that the Fratton faithful can be rewarded with a push for promotion next term.

He said: “It hasn’t been the season we’ve wanted, but the fans stuck with us all the way through.

“They’ve been brilliant and to sell out a stadium this size in League Two is incredible.

“And they’ve also travelled the length of the country to support us, while we haven’t always given them the performances they deserve.

“But the last seven games has proved how good we are as a group of players and hopefully we can push on for promotion next season.”

Danny Hollands hit a hat-trick as Pompey finished the season with a 3-3 draw to stretch their unbeaten run to seven matches.

But a late Plymouth equaliser saw them drop from ninth to 13th in the final League Two standings.

Holmes said: “The crowd said it best about Danny by chanting ‘sign him up’. We call him Iron Man because he’ll run through brick walls for you.

“He makes good decisions and he’s out of contract at Charlton, so hopefully we can snap him up.

“We worked hard to get those goals, although the ones we conceded weren’t good enough and we have to brush up for next season.

“But we weren’t scoring enough previously and we managed to turn that around. It’s the hardest part of the game and we’ve been getting them in bundles lately.

“If we can just sharpen up defensively – and I mean the whole team, not just the back five – then we can push on.”
