LADIES WIN AT KEYNSHAM

13 April 2015

Blues climb up to second place

Pompey Ladies got their title challenge back in track with a 3-1 victory Keynsham.

They remain a point behind leaders Brighton – with a game in hand – after seeing off the side sitting at the foot of the Premier League Southern Division table.

The Blues broke the deadlock on 10 minutes when Jess Frampton’s shot rebounded kindly for Gemma Hillier to tuck the ball home.

And the visitors doubled their advantage before the break, as Shannon Sievwright launched an unstoppable 25-yard drive into the top corner.

Justine Lorton-Radburn did reduce the deficit from the spot after Eilidh Currie had been penalised for a foul in the box.

But Pompey made sure of the three points on 78 minutes when Ini Umotong surged forward and beat several defenders before firing into the net.

Blues boss Perry Northeast said: “At times we played some really nice football and moved the ball around nicely.

“That was only in patches, though, and it shows the character of our senior players that they still give themselves a hard time when we don’t show our full potential.

“But we got the result and that’s the main thing at this stage of the season as we go into the final few games.

“It’s been a long campaign with plenty of games, so to get to mid-April and still be talking about the title is a massive achievement in itself.

“All the sides we’re facing seem to be a lot stronger than they were when we first met, so that adds another challenge.

“But hopefully we can keep winning and beating Keynsham gives us some momentum to take into our match at QPR on Thursday.”

Pompey: Blakely; Currie, Taylor, Rutherford, Bazan; Bloomfield (Clark 61), Sievwright (Kempson 74), Frampton; Hillier, Wilson, Umotong (Dark 86)
