Pompey hit seven past Basingstoke

Lucy Quinn hit a hat-trick as Pompey thrashed Basingstoke 7-0 to ease into the Hampshire Cup final.

The Blues will now look to retain the trophy when they face Portsmouth University at Privett Park on Wednesday, April 16.

They took the lead on 17 minutes when Gemma Simmonds lifted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper.

And Molly Clark then completed a neat passing move to ensure Pompey had a comfortable advantage at the interval.

But it was in the second half that the visitors really hit their stride and Quinn beat two defenders before curling home an unstoppable effort on 70 minutes.

Clark’s near-post header and a neat lob from Tiffany Taylor then put the result beyond doubt.

But there was still time for Quinn to complete her treble, first collecting Jess Frampton’s pass and coolly sliding home before netting a fine solo goal.

Joint Blues boss Perry Northeast said: “It took us a while to settle and get the ball down, but we then started playing some excellent football from back to front.

“I have a lot of respect for this competition and we have a great history in it, but it also gives us the chance to experiment with the starting 11.

“There are a lot of big games coming up for us and plenty to play for, so it was important for us to have a killer instinct.”

Pompey: Blakely, Frampton, McMillan, Murphy, Bazan (Sievwright 68), Simmonds, Hunt (Russell 42), Clark, Quinn, O’Callaghan (Taylor 56), Hillier (c)
