Richardson looks ahead to Exeter JPT tie

Pompey fans could catch a glimpse of some of the stars of the future at Exeter on Tuesday night.

A selection of youngsters will be handed debuts for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy first round tie in Devon.

But Leam Richardson insists that the Blues are still firmly focused on progressing to the next stage of the competition.

And he is confident that a much-changed side will be able to give a good account of themselves at St James Park.

Pompey’s assistant manager said: “It’s a game that we want to win – we’re certainly not disrespecting the competition.

“We won’t be underestimating Exeter, but there are certain players in the squad that we feel need games.

“We’re still learning about a few people – both individually and as part of a collective. It’s a chance to take a close look at them in a competitive environment.

“There will also be some of younger players involved who have got a lot of promise. It’s no secret that we’ve got some talented guys and I’m sure you’ll see that on Tuesday.

“There will be three or four lads making their debuts, but they’re all worthy of playing for Pompey and have been knocking on the door in training.

“We feel we can send this side out and they’ll be capable of getting a result against Exeter.”

Richardson is anticipating that another impressive number of fans will make the trip to cheer Pompey on.

He said: “There have been a few games this month and they’ve always turned out in large numbers – I’m sure it will be no different at Exeter.”
