New Role Pleases Fogden

6 April 2014

Midfielder happy with system switch

Wes Fogden is enjoying his new-found attacking freedom.

The January arrival from Bournemouth has been utilised in a role just behind lone striker Ryan Taylor for the last two matches.

Pompey have won both of them – following up a 2-1 victory at Newport by beating Hartlepool at Fratton Park on Saturday.

And Fogden believes the Blues are working hard as a unit to turn their form around.

He said: “The result on the previous weekend meant we entered this game with plenty of confidence.

“I think that probably showed with the way we started the game – we scored one and could have got a second.

“It was a crucial victory and that’s back-to-back wins now, so hopefully we can continue picking up results.

“The manager’s been brilliant since he’s come in and brought us together as a squad. Everyone’s working hard and we’re playing as a team.

“The system’s more fluid than a rigid 4-4-2, which can be a bit predictable at times. Not many sides play like that anymore.

“It gives me more freedom, but we just have to make sure where other players are roaming forward, so we can fill in their positions.

“It’s all coming together and everyone seems happy to do the ugly things and work hard for each other.”

Adam Webster – making his first Pompey appearance of the season – scored the only goal against Hartlepool in the opening seconds.

Fogden then won a spot-kick that Ryan Taylor was unable to convert before going off with a knee injury late on.

The midfielder said: “I felt it after the penalty decision and I was struggling a bit after that, but it seemed to get better.

“It feels a little bit sore now, but it’s in a brace which should help and hopefully I’ll be fine for next week.”
