Boss delighted with victory
AFC Wimbledon has not been a happy hunting ground for Pompey in recent years.
But there were celebrations at the final whistle when they got the result required to secure a place in the top seven.
Michael Smith’s goal means that, although automatic promotion is not totally out of the question, fans can realistically start planning for the play-offs.
And Paul Cook was delighted with the performance of his side against a Dons outfit who had won five games on the bounce.
The Blues boss said: “We were positive in our play, got men forward and created a few clear-cut chances on a very difficult pitch.
“Wimbledon were the in-form team in the league, but I thought we were excellent and credit must go to our players.
“If we do end up facing them in the play-offs then we can take confidence from the fact that we can beat them.
“Gary Roberts and Kal Naismith have had great chances and we should have scored again, but that’s football.
“If you don’t get that second goal you’re always on a bit of a knife-edge, but our appetite for the game was always there.
“The supporters were in great humour and the players deserve all the plaudits they got – it was a good night.
“Our away form this season has, overall, been very strong – our inconsistency has come more from our results at home.
“We had a lot of lads out injured – I could be here all night talking about them – but whatever team Portsmouth Football Club selects should be good enough to win football games.”
