The Blues finally created an opening of their own soon after, but Danny Hollands could only send the ball straight into the arms of Cherries keeper Benji Buchel.
Bournemouth did increase their advantage midway through the first half, however, as Pitman rose highest to convert a fine cross from former Pompey winger Matt Ritchie.
But the keeper was more assured moments later when he got down quickly to keep out Arter’s angled drive.
The Championship visitors broke the deadlock after just three minutes when Paul Jones allowed Rantie’s volley to squirm through his legs.
But Dunne’s unstoppable strike gave the Fratton faithful something to celebrate before Jed Wallace added a second from the spot.
Goals from Tokelo Rantie, Brett Pitman and Harry Arter saw the Blues go in three down at the interval.
James Dunne scored a spectacular volley as Pompey were beaten 3-2 by Bournemouth in their penultimate pre-season friendly.

Andy Awford made a host of changes at the break, with only Adam Webster and Wallace remaining on the pitch.
Pompey were first to threaten in the second half when Wallace’s free-kick was headed back across goal by Devera, but the Cherries were able to hack the ball clear from a crowded box.
Devera was also in the thick of the action at the opposite end of the pitch as he managed to get in the way of Rantie’s shot.
Bournemouth looked to have cleared their lines as Adam Smith dealt with a Blues cross, but Dunne volleyed it back towards goal, with the ball cracking the post on its way in.
The game appeared to be meandering to a conclusion, but DUNNE woke everyone up with a stunning strike on 74 minutes.
Referee Andy Davies pointed to the spot after Maloney went down under Eunan O’Kane’s challenge and WALLACE stepped up to confidently stroke home the penalty.
Pompey then pulled another goal back from the penalty spot on 83 minutes.
