ACADEMY CLIP ROBINS' WINGS

23 November 2014

Young Blues in 4-3 triumph over Swindon

Liam Sayers (pictured) came off the bench to grab the winner as Pompey beat Swindon in a seven-goal thriller.

The Blues took the lead when the prolific Conor Chaplin collected a ball into the box, spun sharply and produced a neat finish.

But Swindon turned the match on its head as strikes from Josh Cooke and Amir Gied gave them a 2-1 lead at the interval.

Pompey fought back after the break and levelled through Brandon Joseph-Buadi's cool header.

And they regained their advantage when James Granger bent a free-kick into the top corner from the edge of the box.

The Robins were not ready to accept defeat, however, and Jake Evans netted from the spot after Chad Field had been penalised for a foul on Jordan Young in the area.

But substitute Sayers secured all three points when he slotted home after being threaded through by Adam May.

Academy coach Mikey Harris said: “I’m delighted for Liam. He deserved that goal and it will hopefully give him plenty of confidence for the rest of the season.

“After that went in we saw the game out in a very professional manner, having played some very good football for much of the match.

“It was an end-to-end contest that was very entertaining to watch – I’m sure anyone present would have enjoyed what they saw.

“Swindon played a big part in that. They’re a good side and gave us plenty of problems to deal with.

“But our lads are full of belief at the moment and that’s showing in their recent performances.”
