YOUNG BLUES CLIP ROBINS' WINGS

16 August 2015

May and Joseph-Buadi on target at Swindon

Pompey Academy fought from behind to beat Swindon 2-1 and record their first victory of the season.

The hosts took the lead directly from a free-kick midway through the first half.

But the Blues levelled before the break when Adam May (above) finished a fine passing move by firing into the bottom corner from outside the box.

And Brandon Joseph-Buadi completed the turnaround on the hour mark by bursting through the Robins defence and slotting home.

Academy coach Mikey Harris said: “We didn’t start particularly well – Swindon are a good side and we couldn’t get to grips with them.

“We looked like a bunch of individuals rather than a team. The effort was there, but running around a lot is no use if you’re not having an effect on the game.

“Then we conceded a free-kick on the edge of the area and credit to their lad because he curled it right into the bottom corner.

“We were almost trying too hard and pressing at the wrong moments. It was a little bit all over the shop from us.

“Then we finally clicked for the first time late in the first half, put a run of good passes together and Adam drew us level with a decent finish. It’s just a shame that it took us 40 minutes to get going.

“At the break we asked them to play in a different way – to defend deeper, be compact and look to hit Swindon on the counter-attack.

“Normally we look to press, win the ball as quickly as possible and then pass it around, but there are different ways to be successful in football.

“They took that on board and we got the winner when we stole possession, got it to Brandon and he used his pace to excellent effect.

“We then kept our discipline and concentration to see out the game and even had some more chances that we weren’t able to take.

“The boys applied themselves well in the second half and kept to the game-plan that we’d set them.

“I’ve said before that results aren’t important at this level, but they were delighted, while we were pleased to see them take our instructions on board.”
