LADIES SEE OFF LEWES

Another victory for Blues

Pompey Ladies continued their impressive opening to the campaign with a 2-0 victory at Lewes.

They currently sit third in the Premier League Southern Division table – and have a game in hand over both the sides above them.

The Blues came close to breaking the deadlock when Lucy Quinn smashed a shot against the crossbar, with the ball hacked to safety by the home defence.

And Quinn was involved when they did forge ahead on 33 minutes, whipping in a free-kick that was turned home by Leeta Rutherford.

It was Lewes who looked the brighter side at the start of the second half, only for Pompey to double their advantage against the run of play.

They broke quickly up the pitch and Ini Umotong found Charley Wilson, who tucked her shot just past the reach of goalkeeper Lauren Dolbear.

The hosts tried to find a route back into the game, with Danielle Lane denied by Sadie Blakely before Kirstie Spice missed an open goal.

But Pompey held firm to claim victory and might have added a third late on when substitute Jemma Tewkesbury fired narrowly wide.

Blues boss Perry Northeast said: “We’ve come away from a busy eight-day spell with three victories, two clean sheets and a variety of different scorers – so it’s been a positive time for us.

“We were strong and organised against Lewes and did well to win the ball back quickly, but didn’t look at our best in possession.

“The girls were as hungry and determined as ever, although some of our passing patterns were below-par.

“But Lewes are a strong side and came out well at the start of the second half, so our second goal came at the perfect time.

“That’s five wins from five this season, so I suppose I can’t really ask for more, although we’ll keep trying to improve.

“But I must give credit to the girls. It’s great to work with them because their attitude and application is incredible.”

Pompey: Blakely; Bazan, Rutherford, Atkinson, Taylor; Sievwright (Bloomfield 84), Kempson, Quinn (Tewkesbury 76); Hillier, Wilson, Umotong (Simmonds 65)
Subs not used: Benson, Frampton
