LADIES CRUISE PAST SHANKLIN

28 January 2016

Pompey hit double figures in Hampshire Cup

Pompey Ladies cruised into the semi-finals of the Hampshire Cup after hitting double figures against Shanklin at Furze Lane.

And they will look to move another step closer to their defence of the trophy when they host local rivals Southampton in a last four clash later this month.

Ini Umotong hit a hat-trick in the opening 10 minutes of the Shanklin tie, while seven other players were also on target.

Emma Sherwood, Tash Stephens and Molly Clark were next to score, before Rebekah Tonks – making her full debut – added a seventh just before the break.

Gemma Hillier and Leeta Rutherford increased the advantage further in the second half, while Gemma Woodford then grabbed a consolation for the beleaguered visitors.

But it was Pompey who had the final say, as Sarah Kempson ensured that they reached double figures.

Blues boss Perry Northeast said: “The performance was as dominant as the scoreline suggests. We were on top from first whistle to last and played with a good tempo throughout.

“We were able to give a few players some much-needed minutes out on the pitch – and some did enough to suggest they deserve even more.

“Our thanks go to Shanklin for agreeing to play the game on a Thursday night because we were struggling to fit the tie in.

“Now we’re in the semi-finals and we want to go on and win the cup again, but we’ve always said that it’s a competition where we’ll utilise the full squad.”

Pompey: Trodd; Benson, Tonks, Rutherford, Bazan (Taylor 46); Stephens, Sievwright, Bloomfield, Clark (Kempson 46); Sherwood, Umotong (Hillier 46)
